Part the fur and look for small dark insects moving quickly
Check common flea areas: neck, base of tail, belly, groin, and armpits
Use a flea comb and comb through the coat slowly
Tap the comb onto a white paper towel or damp tissue
Look for flea dirt: tiny black specks that turn reddish-brown when wet
Check for red, irritated skin or scabs from scratching
Watch for frequent scratching, biting, licking, or restlessness
Examine bedding and resting areas for fleas or black specks
Run your hands through the coat and feel for small bumps or movement
Check especially after walks, visits to parks, or contact with other animals
