See a healthcare provider for a physical exam if you have sores, blisters, or genital symptoms
Get a PCR or NAAT swab test from a fresh sore or blister
Ask for a viral culture if PCR is not available
Get a type-specific HSV-1 and HSV-2 blood test if you have no sores but want to check past exposure
Wait at least 12 to 16 weeks after a possible exposure before relying on blood test results
Ask about other STI testing at the same time
Do not rely on symptoms alone to diagnose herpes
Seek urgent medical care if you have eye symptoms, severe pain, trouble urinating, or widespread sores
