Set the multimeter to the correct voltage mode
Choose DC voltage for batteries, electronics, and most low-voltage devices
Choose AC voltage for outlets and mains power
Plug the black probe into COM
Plug the red probe into the V port
Select a voltage range if the meter is not auto-ranging
Touch the black probe to the negative or neutral point
Touch the red probe to the positive or live point
Read the voltage value on the display
Keep your fingers away from the metal probe tips
Use one hand when checking high voltage if possible
Do not measure voltage in current mode
Do not touch both probe tips together on a live circuit
Remove the probes after taking the reading
