Park on a level surface and set the parking brake
Start the engine and let it reach normal operating temperature if your vehicle requires a warm check
Keep the engine running and shift through each gear briefly, then return to Park or Neutral
Open the hood and locate the transmission dipstick if your vehicle has one
Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean with a lint-free cloth
Reinsert the dipstick fully, then remove it again
Check the fluid level against the dipstick markings
Check the fluid color and smell
Add the correct transmission fluid only if the level is low
Recheck the level after adding fluid
If your vehicle has no dipstick, check the owner’s manual for the proper inspection procedure
If the fluid is dark, burnt, or contaminated, have it inspected by a mechanic
