How To Cite The Bible?

Bible citation format usually includes the book, chapter, and verse

Example: John 3:16

For a range of verses, use a hyphen: John 3:16-18

For multiple separate verses, use commas: John 3:16, 21

For multiple chapters, include each chapter and verse: John 3:16; 4:1-3

Include the translation if required: John 3:16 (NIV)

In APA style, cite the version in the reference list, not in the in-text citation

In MLA style, cite the Bible version in the works cited if required by your instructor or style guide

In Chicago style, cite the Bible in footnotes or endnotes with the book, chapter, and verse

Use standard abbreviations for Bible books when appropriate

Capitalize book names

Do not italicize Bible book names unless your style guide requires it

Follow the citation style requested by your teacher, publisher, or institution
