Wash your hands thoroughly
Use a clean, soft, damp gauze pad or a clean, soft washcloth
Wrap the gauze or cloth around your finger
Gently wipe the baby’s tongue
Wipe only the tongue and inside of the cheeks if needed
Use plain water only
Do not use toothpaste
Do not use a toothbrush
Do not scrape the tongue
Do not force the mouth open
Clean the tongue once a day or as advised by a pediatrician
Stop if the baby becomes upset or uncomfortable
Contact a pediatrician if white patches do not wipe off or if there are signs of irritation
