Fix the underlying problem first
Turn the ignition off
Locate the OBD-II diagnostic port
Plug in an OBD-II scanner
Turn the ignition to the ON position
Read and save the trouble codes
Select the clear codes or erase codes option on the scanner
Confirm the code reset
Turn the ignition off
Disconnect the scanner
Start the vehicle and verify the check engine light is off
Drive the vehicle and check whether the light returns
