Log in to your American Express account
Go to the account services or card management section
Look for the option to close, cancel, or deactivate the card
Follow the prompts to confirm the closure
Call the number on the back of your card if you cannot close it online
Ask the representative to close the account
Pay off any remaining balance before or after closing, as required
Redeem any available rewards before closing the card
Remove the card from any recurring payments or subscriptions
Destroy the physical card after the account is closed
