Place the chest on the ground
Place the hopper directly above the chest
Aim at the top of the chest while placing the hopper
Make sure the hopper’s output points into the chest
If needed, crouch/sneak while placing to avoid opening the chest
Test by putting an item into the hopper and checking the chest for transfer
