Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C)
Scrub the potato clean and dry it well
Pierce the potato several times with a fork
Rub the skin with a little oil
Sprinkle with salt if desired
Place the potato directly on the oven rack or on a baking sheet
Bake for 45 to 60 minutes, depending on size
Turn once halfway through for even cooking
Check doneness by inserting a fork or knife; it should slide in easily
Remove from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes
Slice open and fluff the inside with a fork
