Wash the asparagus and trim off the tough woody ends
Heat a skillet or sauté pan over medium heat
Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of oil or butter
Place the asparagus in the pan in a single layer
Sprinkle with salt and pepper
Cook for 5 to 8 minutes, turning occasionally
Add a splash of water and cover the pan for 1 to 2 minutes if you want it more tender
Remove from heat when the asparagus is bright green and tender-crisp
Serve immediately
