Rinse 1 cup black lentils under cold water
Pick out any debris or small stones
Soak for 1 to 4 hours if desired
Drain the lentils
Add lentils to a pot with 3 cups water or broth
Bring to a boil
Reduce heat to low
Cover and simmer for 25 to 35 minutes
Stir occasionally
Add more liquid if needed
Cook until tender but not mushy
Drain any excess liquid
Season with salt after cooking
Serve as desired
