Rinse the brown lentils under cold water
Pick out any debris or damaged lentils
Add 1 cup brown lentils to 3 cups water or broth
Bring to a boil
Reduce to a simmer
Cover partially
Cook for 20 to 30 minutes
Stir occasionally
Check for tenderness
Add more liquid if needed
Drain any excess liquid
Season after cooking with salt and other desired ingredients
