Add oil, butter, or both to the skillet
Add chopped onion or garlic if desired
Cook until softened
Add sliced cabbage to the skillet
Season with salt and black pepper
Stir to coat the cabbage evenly
Cook, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage softens
Add a splash of water if the pan gets too dry
Cook until the cabbage reaches your preferred tenderness
Add cooked bacon, sausage, or ham if desired
Taste and adjust seasoning
Serve hot
