Heat a skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat
Lightly oil the pan or brush the burgers with oil
Shape ground beef into patties slightly wider than the buns
Season both sides with salt and pepper
Place the patties in the hot pan
Cook without pressing down on them
Cook for about 3 to 5 minutes on the first side
Flip the burgers once
Cook the second side for about 3 to 5 minutes
Add cheese during the last minute if desired
Check that the burgers are cooked to your preferred doneness
Remove from the pan and let rest for a few minutes
Serve on buns with desired toppings
