Heat a skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat
Lightly oil the pan or add a small amount of butter
Form the ground beef into a patty slightly wider than the bun
Season both sides of the patty with salt and pepper
Place the patty in the hot pan
Cook for 3 to 5 minutes on the first side
Flip the patty once
Cook for another 3 to 5 minutes, or until desired doneness
Add cheese during the last minute if desired
Remove the burger from the pan
Let it rest for 1 to 2 minutes
Place on a bun and add toppings if desired
