Rinse the pearl barley under cold water

Add 1 cup pearl barley and 3 cups water or broth to a pot

Bring to a boil

Reduce heat to low

Cover and simmer for 25 to 30 minutes

Stir occasionally

Add more liquid if needed

Cook until tender and chewy

Drain any excess liquid

Fluff with a fork

Season as desired
