Gather cross-stitch supplies: fabric, embroidery floss, needle, hoop, scissors, and pattern
Choose an easy beginner pattern with large blocks and few colors
Cut a piece of fabric larger than the design
Find the center of the fabric by folding it in half both ways
Place the fabric in the hoop and tighten it
Separate the floss into strands if needed
Thread the needle with the required number of strands
Start stitching from the back of the fabric with a small tail or waste knot
Make the first half of the cross-stitch in one diagonal direction
Complete each stitch by crossing the second diagonal over the first
Keep all top stitches going in the same direction
Count squares carefully to follow the pattern
Work one color at a time when possible
Avoid pulling the thread too tight
Secure the thread at the back when starting and finishing
Trim excess thread neatly
Check your work regularly for mistakes
Remove the fabric from the hoop when finished
Wash and press the finished piece if needed
Frame or display the completed cross-stitch project
