Stop activity immediately
Rest the knee
Apply ice for 15–20 minutes every 2–3 hours for the first 48 hours
Wrap the knee with an elastic bandage
Keep the knee elevated above heart level
Use crutches if weight-bearing is painful
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if safe for you
Avoid heat, alcohol, and massage in the first 48 hours
Begin gentle range-of-motion exercises only when pain starts to improve
Return to activity gradually
See a doctor if swelling is severe, you cannot bear weight, the knee feels unstable, or pain does not improve in a few days
