Apply a warm, moist compress to the boil for 10–20 minutes, 3–4 times a day
Keep the area clean with mild soap and water
Wash your hands before and after touching the area
Do not squeeze, pop, or lance the boil
Cover the boil with a clean, dry bandage or gauze
Change the dressing regularly, especially if it becomes wet or dirty
Use over-the-counter pain relief if needed, following the label directions
Let the boil drain on its own if it opens
Dispose of used dressings carefully and wash hands afterward
Avoid sharing towels, razors, clothing, or bedding
Wash clothing, towels, and bedding in hot water if they contact the boil
Keep the area dry between warm compresses
Seek medical care if the boil is large, very painful, on the face, or not improving
Seek medical care if you have fever, spreading redness, red streaks, or repeated boils
