Apply a cold compress or ice pack wrapped in cloth for 10–20 minutes at a time during the first 24–48 hours
Rest and avoid using the bruised area if possible
Elevate the bruised area above heart level when you can
Apply gentle compression with an elastic bandage if swelling is present
After 48 hours, use warm compresses for 10–20 minutes at a time to help blood flow
Take acetaminophen for pain if needed
Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen in the first 24 hours if bleeding is a concern
Protect the bruise from further injury
Eat foods rich in vitamin C and vitamin K
Stay hydrated
Seek medical care if the bruise is large, very painful, unexplained, or does not improve
Seek urgent care if you have trouble moving the area, severe swelling, numbness, or bruising after a head injury
