Trim the hair around the hot spot
Clean the area gently with a vet-approved antiseptic
Keep the area dry
Prevent licking, chewing, and scratching with an e-collar
Apply vet-prescribed topical medication
Give prescribed oral antibiotics or anti-inflammatories if directed
Treat the underlying cause such as fleas, allergies, or skin infection
Wash bedding and keep the dog’s environment clean
Monitor the area for worsening redness, swelling, odor, or discharge
Contact a veterinarian if the hot spot is large, painful, or not improving
