Wash the toe gently with soap and warm water
Soak the toe in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes, 3 to 4 times a day
Dry the toe completely after washing or soaking
Apply an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment if the skin is broken
Cover the toe with a clean, dry bandage
Change the bandage daily or whenever it gets wet or dirty
Keep pressure off the toe and wear roomy shoes
Avoid picking, cutting, or squeezing the infected area
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if needed and if safe for you
See a doctor if there is pus, worsening redness, swelling, severe pain, fever, or red streaks
Seek urgent medical care if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system
Follow a doctor’s instructions if prescription antibiotics or drainage are needed
