How to Cut Ingrown Toenail at Home?

Soak the foot in warm water for 15–20 minutes to soften the nail and skin

Wash hands and clean the toe with soap and water

Disinfect nail clippers, tweezers, and any tools with rubbing alcohol

Trim the toenail straight across, not rounded at the corners

Cut only the visible nail edge; do not dig into the skin

Gently lift the ingrown edge if it is already loose

Place a small piece of clean cotton or dental floss under the nail edge if needed

Apply an antiseptic or antibiotic ointment to the area

Cover with a clean bandage if the toe is irritated

Wear roomy shoes or open-toe footwear to reduce pressure

Change the cotton or floss daily if used

Soak the toe daily until it improves

Avoid cutting the nail too short

Avoid pulling off the nail or cutting deep into the side

Seek medical care if there is severe pain, swelling, pus, redness spreading, fever, diabetes, poor circulation, or no improvement
