Soak the foot in warm water for 15–20 minutes to soften the nail and skin
Wash hands and clean the toe with soap and water
Disinfect nail clippers, tweezers, and any tools with rubbing alcohol
Trim the toenail straight across, not rounded at the corners
Cut only the visible nail edge; do not dig into the skin
Gently lift the ingrown edge if it is already loose
Place a small piece of clean cotton or dental floss under the nail edge if needed
Apply an antiseptic or antibiotic ointment to the area
Cover with a clean bandage if the toe is irritated
Wear roomy shoes or open-toe footwear to reduce pressure
Change the cotton or floss daily if used
Soak the toe daily until it improves
Avoid cutting the nail too short
Avoid pulling off the nail or cutting deep into the side
Seek medical care if there is severe pain, swelling, pus, redness spreading, fever, diabetes, poor circulation, or no improvement
