Wash the coconut
Find the three soft eyes on one end
Pierce one eye with a clean screwdriver, knife tip, or skewer
Drain the coconut water into a bowl
Hold the coconut firmly on a hard surface
Tap around the middle seam with the back of a heavy knife or a hammer
Rotate the coconut and keep tapping until it cracks open
Pry the halves apart with your hands or a knife
Use a spoon or coconut tool to remove the meat
Cut the coconut meat into smaller pieces if needed
