Choose the right time when your dog is calm and relaxed
Have styptic powder or styptic gel ready in case of bleeding
Use dog nail clippers or a nail grinder sized for your dog’s nails
Familiarize your dog with handling paws and touching nails before trimming
Lightly hold the paw and stabilize the nail you’re cutting
Trim only the small tip of the nail at a time
Avoid cutting into the quick (the pink/red area inside the nail)
If your dog has dark nails, trim very small amounts and stop when you see a gray center or a change in the nail
Check nails one at a time to ensure you’re not trimming too much
After each cut, release pressure and reward your dog
Use a grinder for shorter, gradual shaping if clippers are difficult
Trim front nails first, then back nails, if your dog tolerates it
Remove only enough to prevent clicking on the floor
If you see bleeding, press styptic powder/gel firmly for 30–60 seconds, then monitor
Stop if your dog becomes anxious or struggles; try again later or seek a professional groomer/vet
Trim regularly to keep nails short (rather than cutting large amounts at once)
