Place a paper towel over the area
Gently squeeze the glands inward and upward with your thumb and forefinger
Apply only light pressure
Stop if the dog shows pain, swelling, bleeding, or severe discomfort
Clean the area with warm water and pet-safe cleanser
Wash your hands and dispose of gloves and towels properly
Seek veterinary care if the glands do not empty, seem infected, or keep needing frequent expression
