Turn off and unplug the freezer
Remove all food and store it in a cooler or insulated bags
Take out shelves, drawers, and ice trays
Place towels or a shallow pan around the freezer to catch water
Leave the freezer door open
Speed up melting with bowls of hot water placed inside
Use a plastic or silicone spatula to gently remove loosened ice
Never use knives, metal tools, or sharp objects
Wipe away water as the ice melts
Clean the interior with mild soap and water
Dry the freezer completely
Reinstall shelves and drawers
Plug the freezer back in and turn it on
Wait until it reaches the proper temperature before returning food
Put food back in once the freezer is cold enough
