Turn off the power to the smoke alarm at the circuit breaker
Remove the smoke alarm from its mounting bracket
Disconnect the wiring harness from the back of the alarm
Remove the battery if the alarm has one
Twist off or unclip the alarm from the base, if applicable
Cover the exposed wires with wire nuts if the alarm is hardwired
Restore power only after the replacement alarm is installed
Follow local fire code and manufacturer instructions
