Check the label to determine whether the paint is latex or oil-based
Use up the paint whenever possible
Let latex paint dry completely before disposal
Mix latex paint with cat litter, sawdust, or a paint hardener to speed drying
Dispose of fully dried latex paint in regular trash if allowed by local rules
Take oil-based paint to a household hazardous waste facility
Keep paint cans sealed until you are ready to dispose of them
Remove the lid and let any remaining residue dry before recycling or trash disposal, if permitted
Recycle empty metal paint cans only if your local recycling program accepts them
Do not pour paint down drains, into storm sewers, or onto the ground
