Check the scene for safety
Tap the baby’s foot and shout to see if the baby responds
Call emergency services immediately if the baby does not respond
If another person is present, have them call emergency services and get an AED if available
Place the baby on a firm, flat surface
Open the airway by gently tilting the head back slightly and lifting the chin
Check for normal breathing for no more than 10 seconds
If the baby is not breathing or only gasping, start CPR
Give 2 rescue breaths
Cover the baby’s nose and mouth with your mouth
Give each breath for about 1 second, just enough to make the chest rise
If the chest does not rise, reposition the head and try again
Place 2 fingers on the center of the chest just below the nipple line
Press down about 1.5 inches
Give 30 chest compressions at a rate of 100 to 120 per minute
After 30 compressions, give 2 rescue breaths
Continue cycles of 30 compressions and 2 breaths
If you are trained in two-rescuer infant CPR, use the two-thumb encircling hands technique
Use one thumb on the center of the chest just below the nipple line
Compress about 1.5 inches at a rate of 100 to 120 per minute
Continue CPR until the baby starts breathing, trained help takes over, or emergency services tell you to stop
Use an AED as soon as it is available if it is designed for infants or has pediatric pads
Follow the AED prompts exactly
If the baby is choking and becomes unresponsive, start CPR and check the mouth for a visible object before breaths
Do not perform a blind finger sweep
