Take over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, if safe for you
Use a warm compress on the affected ear for 10 to 15 minutes at a time
Keep the ear dry
Rest and stay hydrated
Chew gum or swallow if the pain is from pressure changes
Use over-the-counter ear drops only if the eardrum is not suspected to be damaged
Avoid putting cotton swabs, fingers, or other objects into the ear
Sleep with your head elevated
Treat nasal congestion with saline spray or a decongestant if appropriate
Seek medical care if the pain is severe, lasts more than a day or two, or comes with fever, drainage, hearing loss, swelling, or dizziness
