Have a veterinarian or groomer show you the proper technique first
Wear disposable gloves
Gather paper towels, pet-safe wipes, and a towel
Have your dog stand or lie in a stable position
Lift the tail gently
Locate the anal glands at about the 4 o’clock and 8 o’clock positions around the anus
Place a paper towel over the area
Apply gentle, steady pressure inward and upward on both glands
Express only until the glands are empty
Stop if the fluid is bloody, very thick, or foul-smelling beyond normal
Clean the area thoroughly afterward
Wash your hands and disinfect surfaces
Contact a veterinarian if your dog seems painful, swollen, or has recurring gland problems
