How to Give Dog Pills Without Food?

Ask your veterinarian if the pill can be crushed, split, or given with a small amount of water

Hold the dog’s muzzle gently and tilt the head slightly upward

Open the dog’s mouth by placing your fingers behind the upper canine teeth

Place the pill as far back on the tongue as possible

Close the dog’s mouth and keep it closed

Stroke the throat or blow gently on the nose to encourage swallowing

Hold the muzzle closed until you see the dog swallow

Offer a small sip of water with a syringe if your vet says it is safe

Check the mouth afterward to make sure the pill was swallowed

Use a pill gun or pill popper if needed

Ask your veterinarian about liquid, chewable, or compounded alternatives if the dog refuses pills
