Meet New York State eligibility requirements
Be at least 18 years old
Be a U.S. citizen or have legal residency status
Be a resident of New York State or have a business office in New York State
Be able to read, write, and understand English
Obtain the New York State Notary Public application
Complete the application accurately
Submit the application to the New York Department of State
Pay the required filing fee
Pass the New York notary public exam if required
Receive your commission from the New York Department of State
Take the oath of office if required
File your oath and bond if applicable
Purchase a notary seal or stamp
Keep a notary journal if desired or required by your practice
Follow New York notary laws and rules
Renew your commission before it expires
