Meet the eligibility requirements:
Be at least 18 years old
Be a resident of New Jersey or have a place of employment or practice in New Jersey
Be able to read, write, and understand English
Not have been convicted of a disqualifying offense
Complete the required application process:
Create an account through the New Jersey Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services online notary application system
Fill out the notary public application
Select a recommender, if required
Obtain the recommender’s approval and signature, if applicable
Pay the required fees:
Submit the state application fee
Pay any additional processing or service fees, if applicable
Take the oath of office:
Receive your commission approval
Take the oath of office before a qualified official
File the oath with the proper county office, if required
Obtain your notary tools:
Purchase a notary seal
Keep a notary journal if desired or required by your practice
Follow New Jersey notary rules:
Verify signer identity
Witness signatures when required
Refuse notarization if the signer is unwilling, unaware, or lacks proper identification
Keep your commission current and renew before expiration
