Determine where to file (bankruptcy court in your district)
Use the correct filing method (efile through the bankruptcy court or file in person as permitted)
File the bankruptcy petition and required schedules/forms:
Assets and liabilities
Income and expenses
Current monthly income (as applicable)
Contracts/leases
Unsecured and secured debts
Creditors and mailing lists
Pay the filing fee or request a fee waiver/fee installment plan if eligible
Submit required statements and declarations (including means test information if applicable)
List all creditors and ensure correct addresses
Attend the meeting of creditors (341 meeting) and bring requested documents
Provide any additional documents requested by the trustee or court
For Chapter 13, propose and confirm a repayment plan and make plan payments
Respond to any objections, motions, or creditor/trustee inquiries
Complete post-filing debtor education and any required compliance steps
Receive discharge (or other final order, depending on chapter and circumstances)
Keep up with required filings and deadlines (especially for Chapter 13)
