Turn off the water supply to the toilet
Put on rubber gloves
Remove excess water from the bowl if needed
Use a flange plunger to create a tight seal
Plunge firmly and repeatedly for 20 to 30 seconds
Flush to check if the clog is cleared
Repeat plunging if needed
Use a toilet auger if plunging does not work
Insert the auger into the drain opening
Rotate the auger to break up or pull out the clog
Flush again to test the drain
Remove the tank lid and check the flapper if the toilet keeps running
Avoid using chemical drain cleaners
Call a plumber if the clog will not clear
