Stop shaving, waxing, or plucking the area until it heals
Wash the area gently with mild soap and warm water
Apply a warm compress for 10 to 15 minutes several times a day
Gently exfoliate the skin with a soft washcloth or mild scrub
Use a clean, sterile needle or tweezers only if the hair is visible above the skin surface
Do not dig into the skin or squeeze the bump
Apply an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream if the skin is inflamed
Use an antiseptic or acne treatment with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide if needed
Keep the area moisturized with a non-comedogenic lotion
Wear loose clothing to reduce friction
Shave in the direction of hair growth once the area heals
Use a sharp, clean razor and avoid close shaving
Seek medical care if there is severe pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, or recurring ingrown hairs
