Use the author’s last name in parentheses: (Smith)
If there is no author, use a shortened version of the website title in quotation marks: (“How to Cite”)
If there are two authors, include both last names: (Smith and Jones)
If there are three or more authors, use the first author’s last name followed by et al.: (Smith et al.)
If the author’s name is mentioned in the sentence, put only the page number or no citation if there are no page numbers: Smith says that…
If the website has no page numbers, omit the page number
If citing a specific section or paragraph, use a section name, paragraph number, or other locator if available: (Smith, par. 4)
If the source has no author and no title, use a brief identifying phrase from the source in parentheses
Place the citation before the period at the end of the sentence
Match the in-text citation to the first word or words of the Works Cited entry
