Gather dry tinder, kindling, and larger fuel wood
Use a safe fire source such as a lighter, matches, or a fire starter
Build a small fire lay with tinder in the center and kindling around it
Light the tinder
Add kindling gradually as the flame grows
Add larger fuel wood once the fire is established
Keep the fire in a proper fire pit, stove, or other safe container
Keep water, sand, or a fire extinguisher nearby
Never leave the fire unattended
Fully extinguish the fire before leaving the area
