Be at least 15 years old
Enroll in a Texas driver education course
Complete the classroom portion or be currently enrolled if allowed by your course provider
Obtain a DE-964 certificate or equivalent proof of driver education completion
Gather required documents
Proof of identity
Proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful presence
Proof of Texas residency
Proof of Social Security number
Proof of school enrollment or completion of a driver education course if under 18
Pass the vision exam
Visit a Texas Department of Public Safety office
Complete the learner license application
Have a parent or legal guardian sign the application if under 18
Pay the required fee
Pass the knowledge test
Receive your learner license
Practice driving only with a licensed driver age 21 or older in the front seat
Follow all learner permit restrictions
Keep the permit until eligible for a provisional license
