Be at least 15 1/2 years old
Complete a California Driver Education course if under 17 1/2 years old
Gather required documents
Visit a California DMV office
Fill out the DL 44 application form
Provide proof of identity, Social Security number, and California residency
Have your thumbprint taken
Have your photo taken
Pass the vision test
Pass the written knowledge test
Pay the application fee
Receive your provisional instruction permit
Practice driving with a licensed adult age 25 or older or a licensed driving instructor
Keep the permit with you while driving
Follow permit restrictions until eligible for a driver’s license
