Complete Form DS-11 for a first-time passport, minor passport, or if your previous passport was lost, stolen, or expired for more than 15 years
Gather proof of U.S. citizenship
Gather a valid government-issued photo ID
Bring a photocopy of the front and back of your ID
Get a passport photo that meets U.S. passport requirements
Apply in person at a passport acceptance facility in North Carolina
Find an acceptance facility such as a post office, clerk of court, public library, or other authorized location
Bring all required documents and fees to your appointment
Pay the application fee and the acceptance fee
If applying for a child under 16, both parents or guardians should appear with the child or provide notarized consent if one cannot appear
If you need a passport card, request it on the application
If you need expedited service, request it and pay the extra fee
Track your application status after submission
Wait for your passport to arrive by mail
