Go to the district clerk’s office in the county where you live, where the other person lives, or where the abuse happened
Ask for an application for a protective order
Fill out the application with details about the abuse, threats, stalking, or violence
Include dates, locations, witnesses, police reports, photos, texts, emails, or other evidence if you have them
Request an emergency ex parte protective order if you need immediate protection
File the completed application with the district clerk
Ask the clerk or court staff about any local forms or filing requirements
Attend the court hearing on the date set by the court
Bring all evidence and any witnesses to the hearing
Explain to the judge why you need protection
Ask the judge to issue a protective order
Get certified copies of the protective order after it is signed
Keep a copy with you at all times
Give copies to your workplace, school, child care provider, and local police if needed
Call 911 if the protected person is in immediate danger
Contact Legal Aid, a domestic violence shelter, or a private attorney for help if needed
