How to Get an Infant to Take a Bottle?
Offer the bottle when the infant is calm and slightly hungry, not overly upset
Have someone other than the breastfeeding parent try the bottle first
Use a nipple with a slow flow and a shape similar to the breast
Warm the milk to a comfortable temperature
Hold the infant in a semi-upright feeding position
Gently rub the nipple on the infant’s lips to encourage rooting
Let the infant suck at their own pace without forcing the nipple in
Try different bottle nipples if the first one is refused
Offer the bottle at different times of day
Try when the infant is sleepy or just waking
Walk, sway, or rock the infant while offering the bottle
Use a small amount of milk at first
Keep the feeding environment quiet and low-stress
Pause and try again later if the infant becomes upset
Practice regularly so the infant can get used to the bottle
If refusal continues, consult a pediatrician or lactation consultant
