Mine coal ore with a pickaxe to get coal
Open a furnace, smoker, or blast furnace
Place wood logs, planks, sticks, or other burnable fuel in the bottom slot
Place any wood item in the top slot as the smelting item
Wait for the smelting to finish
Collect the charcoal from the output slot
Use charcoal as fuel or for crafting torches and campfires
