Brush off any loose mildew outdoors
Wash the clothing as soon as possible
Use the hottest water safe for the fabric
Add regular detergent
Add 1 cup white vinegar to the wash
Or soak the item in a solution of 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water for 30 to 60 minutes
For white or colorfast fabrics, use oxygen bleach according to the label
For stubborn stains, make a paste of baking soda and water and gently rub it on the spot
Wash again after treatment
Dry the clothing in direct sunlight if possible
Repeat the treatment if the stain or odor remains
Do not put the item in the dryer until the mildew is gone
Check the care label before using bleach or hot water
