How to Get Paint Off of Hardwood Floors?

Scrape off dried paint gently with a plastic putty knife or plastic scraper

Wipe up wet paint immediately with a damp cloth

Use warm soapy water for latex paint

Use rubbing alcohol or isopropyl alcohol for small latex paint spots

Use a small amount of acetone or nail polish remover for stubborn paint, testing first in an inconspicuous area

Use mineral spirits for oil-based paint, testing first in an inconspicuous area

Apply the solvent to a cloth, not directly to the floor

Rub lightly and avoid soaking the wood

Wipe the area with a clean damp cloth after removing the paint

Dry the floor completely with a soft towel

Use fine steel wool only very gently on tough spots, if needed and if safe for the finish

Refinish or touch up the area if the finish is damaged
