Drink plenty of fluids (water, broth, oral rehydration solution)
Rest
Wear lightweight clothing and keep the room comfortably cool
Take cool (not cold) sponge baths or wipe with lukewarm water
Use a fan or light ventilation if comfortable
Consider fever-reducing medication if needed:
Acetaminophen (paracetamol) as directed on the label
Ibuprofen as directed on the label (avoid if you have stomach ulcers, kidney disease, are dehydrated, or are pregnant unless advised)
Avoid aspirin for children and teens
Avoid alcohol rubs
Do not overbundle or use excessive blankets
Continue normal eating as tolerated
Seek medical care urgently if any of these occur:
Trouble breathing, chest pain, severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, seizures
Purple or red rash that doesn’t fade when pressed
Severe dehydration (very dry mouth, minimal urination, dizziness)
Fever in infants:
Under 3 months: fever of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher
3 to 6 months: fever of 102°F (38.9°C) or higher or acting very ill
Fever lasting more than 3 days (adults) or more than 24 hours in young children
Fever after recent surgery, serious injury, or with weakened immune system
Fever with severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or worsening symptoms
